This stunning vintage dresser features beautifully ornate, raised detailing that adds elegance and charm to any space. The classic black finish enhances its timeless appeal, while the wood veneer construction offers both beauty and function. Measuring 70"L x 18.75"D x 31"H, it includes nine roomy drawers for ample storage. The original hardware has been refreshed in a modern gold tone but can be changed to black at the buyer’s request. A truly unique piece that combines vintage character with functional design.
These ornate dressers always catch my eye knowing they will be stunning painted.
First step was to remove the hardware, crazy how much lint and fluff accumulated underneath the hardware over the years.
Once the drawers were removed. the inside was vacuumed out well.
Then it was time to give a deep scrub. I mix white lightning cleaner in a bucket of warm water with a bit of Dawn dish soap. Using rags and scrub brushes I get in every nook and cranny inside and out, top and bottom to be sure all the past dust, dirt and grime is gone. Wipe with clean water for a final step.
The hardware was scrubbed well too, rinsed and dried well.
The edges were sanded with a sanding sponge to be sure everything is smooth. The sanding dust was wiped with the damp cloth.
Areas where there were dings, gouges or dents were repaired.
The jumbo dresser was then flipped on its back on my handy furniture mover/dolly and the lower edges sanded smooth as well.
It was now ready to add color - or is black actually no color or is that white and black is all colors mixed?
To move this beast around, I created jumbo dresser moving system using wide planks and a set of 4 furniture caster dollies. I have multiple casters which makes moving stock and projects around so much easier.
NOTE: While the dresser was on its back on the furniture mover I hand painted the base with the grey Dixie Belle BOSS to be sure everything was covered on the underside.
The primer was then sprayed on the dresser and left to dry 24 hours. While this dried I moved onto the hardware.
I have used this classic black color on many projects.

This is the first coat sprayed on.
As you can see there are some lighter areas but a second coat was sprayed on after first coat dried.
The drawers were pulled out and using a small flat synthetic brush the black silk mineral paint was brushed all around the drawer edges. This was repeated for two coats as well.
I actually chose to take the drawers completely out to paint these edges.
This also allowed for the dresser body to have the inner edges painted as well. All these details give a professional feel to the finished paint job.
There was a third coat applied to most of the dresser.
With a 4th coat applied to the top with a big daddy brush while using a fine mist spray bottle. This allows for super great coverage with ease and makes for a streak free finish.
Did I mention it comes if lovely smells too? This one is orange grove.
The drawers were put back in place and the giant dresser moved to my garage doors for a bit of staging seeing hauling it into my house to stage photos would be a lot of work and increases chances of dings while the paint is fresh.
The freshly painted hardware was set in place. I like it, you?
I did a poll on my Facebook and one follower suggested ageing the gold a bit.
I added some black best dang wax but was not a fan so cleaned it off with mineral spirits and resprayed gold.
This beauty is ready for some staging.
Yes it is hard to do in a garage with not the best lighting and a garage door as the back drop but it does give the dresser more pizzaz.
Look at one I find done so similar on Etsy and it sold for over $1000! Mine is priced at $450.
It did not take long to sell this one, it found its new home a few days later.
There was a matching tall mirror that could have been painted to match for an additional fee. The buyers bought the mirror as well.

What a beautiful renovation! I really appreciate all the meticulous work you put into this.
ReplyDeleteThank you Leslie, your kind words mean a lot!!
DeleteI would have used a black primer with all the nooks and crannies. Awesome transformation!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely that would be a great idea, if I had some I would have tried it, thanks for suggestion!
DeleteFor the 4th coat, you said you used a mister bottle. Can you use water with Silk? I never have.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely you can use water with silk paint, many times wetting a synthetic brush to paint helps when very hot and dry out too
