Add rustic charm to any space with this handcrafted bare wood nightstand, measuring 23" wide x 16" deep x 22.5" high. It features two spacious drawers for convenient storage and is accented with unique original hardware that adds character and style. Made of solid oak and sealed with a durable clear coat, this versatile piece works beautifully as a bedside table, an entryway catchall, or a cozy living room end table. It is quite a change from the original state in which I got it.

This poor little nightstand was picked up in rough shape. Somewhere along the line someone started to strip off the old finish but one side had part of the base broke off and it was super dirty and begging for a relove. I did contemplate not reloving but the end result made me very happy I persevered.
Seeing one side had half the bottom edge missing so rather than trying to add to it we chose to cut all the edges to same width. I marked a line and my husband cut the edge off with his circular saw.
In order to remove the remaining old finish that was not all stripped off, I used my Festool orbital sander ETS REQ 125.
It quickly smooths the oak to bare wood and gets rid of that patchy residual finish you can see on the top half of the lower edges I am sanding above.
There are 6 blades each with 2 different shapes you flip to the shape you need. Very handy.
To get the remaining bits along these contours I added the Festool interface pad. These spongy pad gived flex to the paper and gets in the curved spots.
I started on one of the drawer fronts (bottom) with the interface pad on as well but it needs lots more work.
This mouse head attachment gets into the tight corners.
Did you know Serious Grit sandpaper makes sandpaper to fit all the Festool sanders and more at a bit more affordable price range than the original Festool paper.
And I think on this nightstand I used 8 out of the 12 shapes :)
The final step to sanding the wood finish perfectly in these narrow spots is to use this handy micro tool
It is now ready to seal up all that hard work and detailing. But first it was wiped clean with a soft slightly damp rag.
You can see it going on the top half and enriching the wood color to a natural oak color.
The unique original hardware was scrubbed. When doing so the original gold/brass color was revealed in areas so they had been painted in the past. Black is perfect with the natural wood so black they shall stay.
Another coat of Gator Hide was applied and once it dried an even lighter sanding to make the surface buttery smooth.
The now dry hardware was put back on. The outside and inside of the drawers were also treated to a hydrating coat of Big Mama’s Butta.
This handy wood salve comes in unscented and a variety of lovely scents that give a piece a fresh fragrance.
