This adorable tray has been completely reimagined. I updated its original shabby chic white finish to a soft gray, then added a delicate floral rice paper for a touch of elegance. A final layer of dark wax deepens the color and accentuates the details, giving it a beautifully aged, vintage feel.
My mother in law gave me a set of round decorative trays to relove. This is the smaller 11" one.
Like furniture restores, the first step is to clean the piece well. I sprayed the tray with white lightning cleaner then wiped again with clean damp cloth and let dry.
Both trays had some surface issues including possible wax or oil so to seal the surfaces I applied on all sides clear Dixie Belle BOSS using an angled 2" synthetic brush.
This was left to dry 24 hours.
The next day a second coat of oxford fog was applied.
The color was lovely but the trays deserved a bit more pizzaz so I chose a pretty newly released rice decoupage paper called rose tapestry.
The colors in this rice paper pair perfectly with the oxford grey. The paper was cut in half then pressed into place in the center of the tray.
Using a box cutter, I carefully cut the paper to fit the circle edges.
It is now ready to adhere to the tray.
on the tray center while lifting the edges after spraying the underside of the paper first with a fine mist spray bottle.
Turning the tray and repeating these steps continued till the paper was all secure then the top of the paper was given a clear coat as well.
A couple hours later another clear coat was applied on the top of the paper.
The final touch was adding brown best dang wax around the inner edges with an angled artist brush then buffed out to blend. A dedicated dark wax 1" premium chip brush was used to highlight the 90 degree edges and bring our details in the wood and metal handles. This dark wax gives and added dimension and vintage vibe to the tray.
A few days later after all dried well, I brushed on another flat clear coat.
The tray is ready again to serve!
