From Dated to Designer: The Secretary Desk Refresh

This transformation takes a dated, two-tone secretary desk and turns it into a sophisticated, modern statement piece. By trading the aged pink and cream for a uniform, soft neutral, the beautiful French provincial lines of the piece truly get to shine. From Dated to Designer: The Secretary Desk Refresh This project is a perfect example of how a monochromatic color palette can completely change the "vibe" of furniture. The original piece had a charming silhouette, but the mismatched pink and cream finish felt a bit scattered. The Transformation Details: The Palette: We moved away from the high-contrast two-tone look and opted for a cool, soft gray . This single-color approach streamlines the desk's appearance, making it look more expensive and cohesive. The Hardware: We kept the original crystal-style knobs . Against the new gray finish, they sparkle much more effectively, adding a touch of "jewelry" to the finished piece. The Features: The hutch’s intricate ...

Modernized Solid Pine Hand Crafted Heart Wall Shelf

Bringing New Life to a Country Classic.

We’ve all seen them: those solid, well-built pine shelves from the 80s and 90s that have a lot of heart (literally) but are stuck in that unmistakable "orange" stain era. While the craftsmanship is top-tier (this one was hand crafted by my father in law), the color can often feel a bit too retro for a contemporary home.

In this tutorial, I’m showing you how to take a vintage 9-cubby wall shelf and transform it from a dated relic into a bolder, fresher, and more current statement piece. By applying a rich chestnut brown stain, we’ve traded that brassy orange hue for a deep, sophisticated tone that highlights the wood grain.

Follow along as I walk you through the prep, the staining process, and how this simple color shift completely changes the vibe of the piece—making those iconic heart cutouts feel intentional and chic rather than just "country."

This pine shelf is a quintessential piece of country-chic decor, offering that perfect blend of 1980s nostalgia and timeless cottage charm. With its warm wood tones and iconic heart cutouts, it’s a versatile piece that functions as both storage and a statement.

My father-in-law created numerous personalized cubby shelves for his family and friends. This particular one was displayed with pride in their home. When they moved to a smaller place, it was time for the shelf to find a new loving home.

As always the first step to any relove is a good deep clean. I used the spray version of white lightning cleaner and a damp cloth getting into all the corners and edges. This was followed with a second pass with clean water damp cloth.

Once dry, I did a stain test on the back side trying out one of Dixie Belle Paint's newly released No Pain Gel Stain color chestnut. I liked the warm brown color.

Luckily many of the wood partition pieces were able to be slid out making the staining process much easier.

Using a blue shop towelthe chestnut No Pain Gel Stain was wiped on and allowed to penetrate for about 10 minutes. With a fresh blue shop towel, the excess was wiped off.

Setting it on its side while staining certainly helped with access to the shelf areas.

Systematically I continued staining all sides of the unit.

Above is the very last area to stain over the original honey oak stain color.

It is honestly that easy to update stain colors on new or previously stained wooden projects. you can see MORE of my updated with gel stain projects HERE.

Now to secure the shelves back in place with Titebond ultimate wood glue.

I also needed to stain 2 - 3/8" hardwood mushroom wood plugs to pop in the wall screw holes.

That "orange" pine look is a classic staple of the past, but it can definitely feel a bit dated in a modern space. Switching to a rich chestnut brown is a total game-changer—it adds a level of sophistication that the original honey oak/orange stains just can't match.

  1. Wow--hand-crafted by your father-in-law?! It's beautiful. I, too, had one in this 90s style with the "orange" stain. Funny--it didn't even seem orange at the time, but looking back... ha Your update is just gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this post with us at the Will Blog for Comments #77 linkup. :)

    1. Isn't that the truth? I agree on the did not seem orange BUT I think stain changes over time as I feel my custom stained kitchen cabinets now 15 years late have an orange tint in some lighting
