I have had my sideboard sitting in our home in full use for about 4 years now with the intention of refinishing it however like the cobbler's children with no shoes, it gets overlooked all the time. I recently made time for it deciding it needed a good drink of oil as the previously stripped left the surface so dry.
The wood is so dry ;( , lets give this old girl a drink
But first it was time to sand down the top with an orbital sander to give a smooth fresh start to the top.
Everything received 2 coats of hemp oil hydration, inside and out on all sides.
It soaked up two coats of hemp oil like nothing. I like to apply the oil with a blue shop towel then wipe excess off after 15 minutes with a dry one but currently was out so used a paper towel.
Above is the drawer above with hemp oil showing the difference of the dry old wood
To darken the wood, I chose Fusion - (whose parent company is Homestead House) stain finishing oil in cappuccino. I wiped it on with a paper towel, leave for about 15 minutes then use another paper towel to remove the excess. Be sure to wait at least 9 hours between coats or the dark color will wipe off easier - ask me how I know :)
The products are so low VOC you can use right in your home.
I went with 2 coats of the dark stain but the finish was more matte and not quite even having been so dry. Fusion - (whose parent company is Homestead House) has a new stain finishing oil color called natural in the line so I applied 4 more coats of it which resulted in a lovely shine and gave added durability especially to the top that gets lots of use.
Timeless!
