From Dated to Designer: The Secretary Desk Refresh

This transformation takes a dated, two-tone secretary desk and turns it into a sophisticated, modern statement piece. By trading the aged pink and cream for a uniform, soft neutral, the beautiful French provincial lines of the piece truly get to shine. From Dated to Designer: The Secretary Desk Refresh This project is a perfect example of how a monochromatic color palette can completely change the "vibe" of furniture. The original piece had a charming silhouette, but the mismatched pink and cream finish felt a bit scattered. The Transformation Details: The Palette: We moved away from the high-contrast two-tone look and opted for a cool, soft gray . This single-color approach streamlines the desk's appearance, making it look more expensive and cohesive. The Hardware: We kept the original crystal-style knobs . Against the new gray finish, they sparkle much more effectively, adding a touch of "jewelry" to the finished piece. The Features: The hutch’s intricate ...

French Provincial Nightstand Modern Makeover

This nightstand is part of a charming French Provincial style bedroom set originally crafted by Malcolm Furniture here in Canada years ago. One of my valued customers entrusted me with giving this piece a fresh, updated look. She envisions the entire set transformed into a soothing medium grey, perfectly complementing her new home's décor. Given the nightstand's beautiful, solid construction, it was an easy and rewarding decision to invest in revitalizing this quality piece, ensuring it continues to bring beauty and functionality to its new setting.

The drawer waas lined so I cut small slits to access the screws to remove the drawer pull.

As always, the cleaning stage is paramount. After removing the drawer pull, I utilized a spray cleaner and a damp cloth to thoroughly clean all surfaces, inside and out. Any edges with minor chips were smoothed with a sanding sponge, and then any remaining dust was carefully wiped off.

The nightstand is now ready for the painting process. Given the original finish's characteristically slick, shiny, and exceptionally smooth surface, applying a high-quality primer is an absolutely crucial step. This crucial initial layer will ensure excellent paint adhesion, preventing any potential issues such as peeling or flaking, and allowing the new coat of paint to bond securely and create a durable, long-lasting, and beautiful finish on this revitalized piece of furniture.

Dixie Belle Bonding Boss is the answer. I applied it with a medium flat synthetic brushIt is the perfect size for this size of project.

Here is a video showing how I use long strokes after doing an across grain motion to fill the micro fissures in the original finish.

The first coat of BOSS on and left to dry 4 hours.

This primer layer helped me see some missed dings and holes. I filled them with DAP premium wood filler, let it dry, then sanded smooth as well as the rest of the primer surfaces.

Following the application of the second primer layer and a 24-hour drying period, the entire piece was smoothed with a sanding block. This thick pad guarantees an even surface finish.

Dixie Belle silk mineral paint in the color Wharf was applied with a clean, flat, medium synthetic brush.

The color shown is the initial coat, however, the image was captured in the evening without artificial lighting, resulting in a darker appearance.

The drawer pull was scrubbed up with Scrubby Soap and dried with a towel, ready to put back on.

Two coats of the lovely grey paint were applied again with a light sanding spongeafter the last coat dried to keep it buttery smooth.

The pull was put back on and this beauty is complete.
