From Gilded to Grounded: A Standing Jewelry Armoire's Dark Moody Transformation

Sometimes, a "bright and airy" makeover just doesn’t fit the vibe. I found this standing jewelry armoire after it had already been given a white and gold facelift by someone else, but it felt a bit too "glam" for many people. I knew it had the potential to be something much more sophisticated, mysterious, and—of course— moody . In this tutorial, I’m taking you through the process of retaining some of the previous DIY and layering on a deep, velvety dark green finish. We’ll be leaning into those shadows, highlighting the unique curved silhouette. Whether you're looking to tone down a piece that's "too bright" or you're ready to embrace the dark academia aesthetic, here is how I turned a high-contrast piece into a seamless, moody masterpiece.

Spray Painted Light Fixtures and Registers


We recently renovated our rental townhouse which included spray painting the metal air vents, floor registers and light fixtures. This is a great way to save money and things from the dump.

The pieces before all in need of a paint refresh

The vents were mainly dirty but a new coat of paint would not hurt. But a few were awfully dirty and rusty having gotten wet over the years.


Here are the pieces needing a fresh coat of paint



First step was to scrub them thoroughly. I sprayed them with Mean Green spray cleaner first.


Then used a scrub brush to get in all the nooks and crannies.


Then they were rinsed and set up to dry.


There were a few marks that need further stain removal.


All vents were set outside to air dry well.


The light fixtures were sprayed with Mean Green spray cleaner and wiped well.


To prevent any spray paint from getting in the electrical parts the ends were filled with paper.


All pieces were set on a large piece of cardboard to protect my garage floor.


Then the layers of Krylon Color Maxx white spray paint were applied.


multiple light coats were sprayed on


The registers had there vents opened and used to keep all sides able to spray then flipped over.


Once all sides were painted to the color I wanted they were left to dry well.

We did this same thing at our daughters townhouse on many light fixtures, registers, and door knobs (click link to see) years ago and they are still looking fabulous over 5 years later.


And once the flooring was in and the painting done, they were all put back in place.



All looking fresh and revived. 

Note on the light fixtures - seeing they get hot when in use, I would suggest a high heat spray paint but of course colors are limited.

    The transformation is better than new. The process takes patience but saves money and saves so much from going into the dump. Great job.
