Refinished Solid Oak Queen Headboard – Classic Black with Rattan & Elegant Details

This stunning queen-size headboard is a true statement piece, crafted from solid oak and beautifully refinished in a rich, classic black. It features gracefully curving finials, intricate oval cartouche accents, and a striking inset rattan panel that adds texture and timeless appeal. Finished with a smooth satin clear coat for durability and a subtle sheen, this headboard blends traditional charm with modern sophistication.

Walnut and Black Wooden Stool

I love using wooden stools as plant stands — they fit seamlessly into almost any area of the home and add the perfect bit of height to a plant collection. They also make charming standalone pieces and can double as extra seating when needed.

This basic white and wood stool was in need of a little love, so I gave it a fresh new look with a classic black finish paired with warm wood tones. The contrast completely transformed it, bringing out the richness of the wood and giving it a timeless, cozy feel.

The stool was cleaned well then the seat removed. It had water damage from perhaps a past use as a plant stand. The finish was wearing too so time to strip it back to raw wood. EZ Strip paint & varnish stripper
was applied, scraped off after about 15 minutes, scrubbed with a brush and water and left to dry.

Using my Festool orbital sander ETS REQ 125, the top was sanded smooth with 120 & 180 grit sandpaper. On the curved edges I used the Festool interface pad to mold easily around hte curves to bring it all to bare smooth raw wood.

The base was painted 2 coats of grey Dixie Belle Bonding Boss that I missed taking a photo of. This helps adhere paint to the super smooth factory white finish the stool was done in. Then 2 coats of anchor Dixie Belle silk mineral paint was brushed on using a medium flat synthetic brush perfect size for the legs and rungs. You can see a coffee table in the back ground that I was painting anchor as well.

The raw wood top was set on the dry base to decide on color. Originally I considered doing a natural wood and black combo but changed my plan.

Before staining I treated the raw wood with a coat of pre stain wood conditioner applied with a blue shop towel.

Let absorb for 30 minutes and wipe off excess.

That gave a warmer natural color but still think I will stain it a lighter stain.

I choose golden ash No Pain Gel Stain

Once dry I set it together and brought inside my house to decide on the golden ash stain color.

It is a pretty stain color but I was just not loving it with the black.

No problem, a coat of my favorite walnut Gel Stain was applied and it was perfect.

Once dry for 72 hours the stained seat was sealed with a satin clear coat.

Once a simple white wood stool, this piece has been artfully transformed into a striking blend of modern and classic style. The base now boasts a sleek black finish, perfectly complemented by a rich walnut-stained seat that highlights the natural wood grain. Standing 26" high, it’s the ideal height for versatile use—whether as sophisticated extra seating, a unique plant stand, or a charming accent in any corner of your home. This one-of-a-kind piece brings warmth, contrast, and style wherever it’s placed.
