I recently gave this unique old book case end table a total new look. It had previously been given a faux treatment years ago that was now in real rough shape. What do you think of this new rich chocolate brown stain and paint makeover?
This angle of the inside edges shows the faux treatment done years ago.
As always a good scrub is needed as the first step of a rejuvenation. I use white lightning cleaner mixed in warm water with a bit o dawn soap to scrub. Then rinse all well and dry. This cute demi lune table was being worked on at the same time.
When it bubbled the finish was scraped off and put in my collection tub (large plastic popcorn container). The sides were stripped as well.
The stripper was neutralized with water and dried. The stubborn layers of paint still persist.
I worked thru 80 and 120 grits to finally get to bare wood.
The sanding continued on each of the sides as well. The inside edges and storage area was power sanded as well to leave a smooth finish.
To get the remaining finish at the top edges eluded by the orbital sander I used my Richard Tools small carbide scraper. It gets right up tight to the edges and removes nicely.
The smaller scraper works well on the edges too.
I always keep my spent sanding paper and use for areas like this under edge and edge grooves to sand smooth.
Fusion stain and finishing oil is my favorite high traffic stain to use. Recently the introduced some new colors. I thought I would try the new light oak color.
Here it is on half the top
It was then applied to both sides as well and left to dry. However I did not feel the light oak color did this piece justice. It needed to be dark and classic.
I moved on to the inside edges and magazine/book rack area. I chose the rich dark chocolate color called umber from the Dixie Belle silk mineral paint line. I used a small flat synthetic brush to get in all the tight areas. This all in one paint was perfect to do this area and the color just popped.
Once the stained top and sides were dry, it was time to add a darker shade.
This was the perfect color for this piece!
Once the stain had dried for 3 days I flipped it and painted all the underside edges with the umber silk mineral paint .
The contoured edges were painted with a small angled Artist Brush.
The final step I did was apply and buff in clear Fusion furniture wax to the stained areas to give soft vintage sheen.
I love the end look.
The sweet little table in its new home, thanks Brandi for shopping with us!
