Refinished Solid Oak Queen Headboard – Classic Black with Rattan & Elegant Details

This stunning queen-size headboard is a true statement piece, crafted from solid oak and beautifully refinished in a rich, classic black. It features gracefully curving finials, intricate oval cartouche accents, and a striking inset rattan panel that adds texture and timeless appeal. Finished with a smooth satin clear coat for durability and a subtle sheen, this headboard blends traditional charm with modern sophistication.

This solid oak queen size headboard was part of a bedroom suite I bought from a friend years ago. It sat patiently waiting its turn to get a makeover. The matching tall boy chest of drawers was done in a warm white as well as a sweet little matching nightstand.

The headboard was cleaned well with TSP alternative in warm soapy water, ready for its makeover.

Fusion Mineral Paint {get 10% off your order with this link} has a new paint line called Alchemy, a mixture of acrylic, limestone and chalk paint.

These are the small tester sizes (120 ml)

I wondered if this bottle of onyx would cover this oak queen headboard, let's see.

The first coat of onyx went on easily. This new paint formula seems thinner than the OG Fusion mineral paint. With the first coat, I originally planned to create a worn weathered look you can see above just in case I did not have enough.

It dries quickly too which is a bonus.

But I flipped my plan and applied 2 coats for a solid color. And guess what? I had about 1/3 of the jar left!

I did use a bit more of it with various touch ups as this paint does lift easily on a prefinished surface if you happen to over work the area.

To seal this paint I chose Fusion's tough coat. I started with applicator sponge but found the headboard angles and this paint formula lifted with the sponge. It also could have been the dampness of the sponge which I normally do with the regular Fusion mineral paint but I stopped after a few passes.

This is where my touch ups came in. These touch ups were easy to do.

I swapped to the synthetic brush I used to paint with to apply the tough coat. The bit of paint left in the brush mixed easily with the sealer. Two coats of sealer were applied.

And this headboard is ready to be a beautiful addition in someone's bedroom.

There is loads of texture and details that are enhanced with this paint process.

How does it compare to Fusion's coal black mineral or milk paints? Check out these projects I have done in them.
