Walnut MCM Dresser with Warm White Accents

I am a huge wood grain fan and when I find MCM pieces which usually are walnut wood I am thrilled to give them an update. This 6 drawer dresser did not disappoint. The warm white and wood combo is always a favorite of mine. How about you?

Scandinavian Inspired Dresser Makeover

This dresser makeover is pretty extreme don't you think? From dark and dreary to light and airy with a very Scandinavian vibe.

The dresser has great classic bones but the original vintage glossy dark finish needed to go.

Hardware was removed, drawers taken out and the entire thing cleaned very well inside and out to remove years of use. The dresser sides were scuff sanded with a fine grit RAD pad by SurfPrep.

The arborite top had areas that had bubbled which were power sanded smooth. This was all sealed up with a few coats of Dixie Belle Slick Stick.

I brushed on a coat of sand castle Dixie Belle silk paint using the flat medium Dixie Belle synthetic brush.

This brush works great for this paint that has a built in primer and top coat.

While the body paint dried I tried a new stripper on the drawer fronts as they are solid wood called EZ Strip paint and varnish stripper. It is water based and low VOC.

I tried power sanding the drawer front on the left but this factory finish is tough. I brushed the stripper on with a Dixie Belle chip brush. It wanted to pool so covered all with a recycled plastic bag shown below.

This more earth friendly stripper takes more time to work, patience is key.

Once I scraped off the finish as best I could (middle) I power sanded to bare wood (lower). Such a huge difference from the original.

My outdoor sanding station in progress.

Isn't that wood grain amazing? It is going to add so much to this dressers final look.

As per most pieces there is always some repairs, this one needed a couple drawer runners glued and clamped.

The sand castle color was not quite what I envisioned so the next coat was endless shore Dixie Belle silk paint. It is much lighter as you can see above.

The solid wood feet were power sanded to bare wood as well.

I set the sanded drawers in and leg to see my plan.

However I felt it needed to go even lighter so the 3rd coat was Dixie Belle silk paint in saltwater. Again you can see how much lighter it is on the left compared to the last color. Two coats of saltwater were applied. Between each coat of paint when dry the surface was lightly sanded with a Dixie Belle sanding sponge.

To enhance and seal the gorgeous wood I rolled on Dixie Belle satin clear coat with a microfiber roller.

And on the legs too. Two coats were rolled on then one brushed.

Using the roller and Dixie Belle satin clear coat I added a subtle reflective pattern with the royal damask Dixie Belle stencil.

It adds just the perfect amount of shine and pretty to the dresser.

I set the sealed drawers in to see with the body and LOVE it!

I pondered adding the lower line of Dixie Belle silk screen stencil but decided to leave simple and timeless but can always add later.

I changed out the original tiny gold top knobs for these gorgeous glass knobs from D Lawless Hardware.

I am keeping the original pulls as the design is so unique however should I make them silver? I have this diamond Dixie Belle gemstone mousse.

Or the body paint color?

I did one of each and put the poll out on my social media pages. The body color won hands down.

The pulls were scrubbed well then a coat of Dixie Belle Slick Stick was applied to provide great adherence for the paint.

I like to use a box to hang them to dry well before putting 2 coats of the saltwater paint on all sides drying well between coats.

The freshly painted pulls were put on and this gorgeous girl is complete.

The nude natural drawers are so zen like and relaxing.

Can you see the pretty damask pattern?

These classic glass knobs add the perfect amount of sparkle too.
