Classic Black Antique China Cabinet

Does anyone have china dishes anymore? Is it still a thing? Years ago, when I got married, it was all about picking your china pattern and creating a gift registry for the pieces you needed. My pattern was called Chelsea by Royal Doulton, and it was a soft muted floral.

2 Custom Ordered Growth Rulers

It has been a hot minute since I have created custom growth rulers due to the price and condition of wood available in the pandemic. Wood prices have soared yet the quality seems to have declined; available boards are twisted, cracked and damaged perhaps after being picked over with the increased prices. I finally managed to find some boards and get creating.

Two custom growth rulers were ordered for 2 new babies; one in grey/white combo and one in a black/white combo. They are both so different reflecting why custom ordering allows such fun personalization.

Sourcing wood since the pandemic is still a problem and when it is found it is pricey and warps (above left) in short order after being unbundled.

One board had allot of sap running out so I scraped it off and sprayed on a Zinsser Bull's Eye spray shellac to stop it.

Deep knots were filled with Dixie Belle mud and when dry sanded smooth as well as any other rough areas on the board surfaces and edges.

To prevent the knots from bleeding too, both sides were painted with white Dixie Belle BOSS.

Both rulers had 2 coats of BOSS on the fronts and are now ready for the paint coat.

Using Dixie Belle synthetic brushes one was painted Baja gray and the other whitecap Dixie Belle silk mineral paint. Two coats were brushed on.

On the gray ruler, whitecap Dixie Belle silk mineral paint was used to paint on the Muddaritaville Studio growth ruler stencil (NOTE: using my affiliate link gives you 10% off)

The new baby family chose large upright numbers for their ruler. I also did the measurements to make the ruler track above 6 feet as the parents are tall; another great customization for the baby gift.

On the whitecap ruler, anchor silk mineral paint was used for the growth ruler stencil . I used a Dixie Belle Artist Brushes to do touchups where needed.

On the white ruler the customer had it customized with her new daughter's name; Gal. Seeing I hand paint the names on any choice of font can be used so I show different options till the desired one is picked. Then it is printed out and to transfer onto the ruler I use the pencil method; rub a pencil on the backside of the paper and trace on the ruler.

Using the angled Artist Brush I then hand paint the name on the board.

Another customization is adding graphics. As a bonus I added some black and white floral graphics from the buds and branches Dixie Belle transfer which looked very pretty with the black and white ruler.

To seal in the transfers I applied clear Dixie Belle's best dang wax with my dedicated Dixie Belle best dang brush.

The two custom ordered rulers look very different but each one represents a unique family!

These growth rulers make the best baby gifts to track years of growth and so many ways to customize.

Here are many more varieties I have created.

Notice how the grey ruler's markings allow for taller measurements recorded?
