From Gilded to Grounded: A Standing Jewelry Armoire's Dark Moody Transformation

Sometimes, a "bright and airy" makeover just doesn’t fit the vibe. I found this standing jewelry armoire after it had already been given a white and gold facelift by someone else, but it felt a bit too "glam" for many people. I knew it had the potential to be something much more sophisticated, mysterious, and—of course— moody . In this tutorial, I’m taking you through the process of retaining some of the previous DIY and layering on a deep, velvety dark green finish. We’ll be leaning into those shadows, highlighting the unique curved silhouette. Whether you're looking to tone down a piece that's "too bright" or you're ready to embrace the dark academia aesthetic, here is how I turned a high-contrast piece into a seamless, moody masterpiece.

Antique Chair turned Planter in Bold Red


This very worn old antique chair received the best makeover to give it new purpose and life!!


Years of use and wear then spending time in the elements being stored in various farm outbuildings had this antique chair looking a bit worse for wear.


but it was in for an extreme makeover starting with a really good scrub then the warped veneer layers clamped and left to dry.





Once it was dry, the layers were lifted and wood glue smeared around 


                                                        then again clamped flat.


The chair top is now ready to cut out the center to become a planter.

 

Using a nail in the chair center and a string, a 8 1/2" circle was drawn to fit perfectly within the solid wood seat support frame.


then carefully cut out with a jigsaw.


The overhang on the right side where the veneer was reglued was cut off and all sanded to lift old finish then wiped clean ready to paint.


Fun and bold, Fort York red from Fusion Mineral Paint  (get 10% off your order using this link) was brushed on in two coats.


When both coats were dry, the entire chair was distressed sanded to keep the aged worn feel. To further age it and seeing it will be used outside, Rustoleum antiquing glaze was wiped on and off. This added the perfect finish to this sweet chair.


 


Here is the chair strapped in safely to be delivered along with the warm white sofa table.


And here it is proudly displaying flowers on its new deck, it looks lovely. I LOVE seeing old things have new purpose!
